Counseling@Northwestern Attends the 2018 International Association for Counselling Annual Conference
This September, the International Association for Counselling (IAC) held its annual conference in Rome. The association continent-hops each year. The previous conference was in Buenos Aires, and the 2019 conference is scheduled for Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, May 13-16.
We are proud to say that Counseling@Northwestern was well represented in Rome.
In addition to the counselors from across the globe who attended, the conference welcomed:
- Four Counseling@Northwestern core faculty members:
- Tonya Davis
- Russell Fulmer
- Nate Perron (IAC executive committee member)
- Joy Whitman
- One Counseling@Northwestern student:
- Ariel Rock
- Two graduates of the Counseling@Northwestern program:
- Naveed Khan
- Lisa Pisani
- One reflective practitioner supervisor:
- Roberta Miranda
- One adjunct faculty member:
- Mijin Chung
Counseling@Northwestern faculty members often present with students at state, regional, national, and international conferences. This year, Dr. Davis and I presented with Ms. Pisani, while Dr. Perron presented with Ms. Rock.
For incoming students who aspire to take on one of these opportunities, I suggest identifying your research areas of interest. Work on research of your own. Learn as much as you can. And if you are enrolled in the program or interested in enrolling, locate faculty members with similar interests. Offer to help with their research projects and presentations. Be proactive!
Also, don’t limit yourself to the familiar. This conference is also a reminder that students can be involved with counseling across the globe. Start by learning about the counseling profession in another country, say Argentina or Italy. Ask questions like: Are counselors regulated there? Do they have associations? Do they hold conferences and have journals? You can even contact the IAC and express an interest in volunteering. According to its website, you can “e-volunteer” from anywhere in the world. Sure, traveling to another country may not be possible for you right now, but any involvement is a step in the right direction.
Partner, present, and learn about the world with Counseling@Northwestern. The possibilities are endless.
